UN Global Compact
The Global Compact in Bangladesh Although a formal Global Compact Network in Bangladesh does not yet exist, the Global Compact is supporting various efforts by the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) and UNDP Bangladesh to raise awareness among the business community. Activities/Events The introduction of the Global Compact to key businesses in Bangladesh took place on 12 March, 2002 through the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute, with high-level UNDP participation. BEI has been actively engaged in various outreach programmes with its participants to strengthen support for the Global Compact and to promote its principles. Currently, there are over 30 Global Compact participants from Bangladesh. The CSR Centre housed within BEI, is developing a plan that will promote the Global Compact and CSR in partnership with BEI. Plans are underway to launch a Global Compact Local Network in early 2009 with strong support and participation from the UN Global Compact office in New York. BEI organized a roundtable discussion on the UN Global Compact on September 23, 2008 to discuss the idea of the Bangladesh Network. Mr. Farooq Sobhan, President of BEI, chaired and moderated the meeting. In attendance were representatives from chambers, academia, civil society, think tanks and leading business houses including ACI, Rahimafrooz, Square, Unilever Bangladesh, and British American Tobacco Bangladesh. Participants showed their readiness to support the Global Compact local network activities and using the Global Compact as a platform to launch partnership programmes in the country. They also stressed the need for further training and capacity building for the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Communication on Progress (COP).
